Lessons in Amsterdam
I was an accredited cycling instructor with the Bikeability Trust, in the UK, for around 9 years – and whilst the Netherlands can be a lot more friendly to people on bikes, there are challenges present which present their own difficulties and that I can help with. Whether it is learning to ride, getting used to using a terugtraprem (back pedal brake), negotiating tram tracks, learning the road laws, or riding in the pell-mell of Harlemmerdijk one of my courses an be well-adapted to suit the needs of the lesson.
So many journeys can be more easily made in the Dutch capital by bike – around 40% of all journeys are made using this method. You aren’t constrained by timetables, it’s massively inexpensive, an it great for your mental and physical health – and cycling is implicitly a social activity. And whilst the gemeente (local municipality) are hard at work trying to make things even better for those on a bike, riding in Amsterdam can still feel daunting. But it needn’t be, as there are simple methods we can employ to help you feel comfortable on any fietspad (cycle lane) you encounter.
Courses and Offers
Lessons last for 1 hour and I offer them from €40 (excl. travel costs) – and if you buy 4 lessons you only pay for 4 (€120).
My Method
There are 4 simple steps (very much inspired by the Bikeability Trust’s 4 key skills) we can look to work on our skills (more of which is expanded on in my Cycling Courses section of this website)
- Awareness
- or observation – staring aware in our surroundings really help us with the rest of our skill set. We can learn to make better decisions and to assess what is around us and what we can do next.
- Positioning
- where we ride can really help signal what we intend to do, especially when we are looking to do things (like make turns, tackle junctions).
- Communicating
- who is around and how can we tell them what we are doing? From a hand signal, to a nod, there are so many things encompassed by this portion of the course.
- Priority
- how do the laws work on the road and how do we do we get to where we want to go whilst knowing how the rules of the game work. Sometimes people follow rules, sometimes, they don’t, here we can get an idea of what to do in both of these situations.
Where We Can Meet…
Vondelpark is generally the place where we have our first lesson – it is such a lively place with everything going on – but it also has some quiet little nooks and crannies where we can begin our cycling lesson. From there we can practice our skills – or head out to wherever we might want to go.
It it not a location that works for you?
We can easily work out somewhere else that might suit – the main thing we are looking for is a place with wide paths or a wide open and flat area. If you are not sure, just send me a message 🙂 I also offer lessons in areas around Utrecht, Amersfoort, Hilversum, and beyond.
